Ketone Functional Group

Carbonyl or ketone group (> CO) :

Organic compounds containing > CO as the functional group are called ketones. For example, Propanone  (CH_3COCH_3) is a ketone.

Nomenclature: 

IUPAC:

.Fistly choose the longest chain a the parent chain.

. Indicate the presence of ketone by replacing suffix 'e' of the alkane with the 'one'.

. Number the chain to give smallest number to the carbonyl group.   

Common name: 

Common name  is derived by listing the alkyl substituents attached to the carbonyl group in alphabetical order, followed by word ketone.
